3 Reasons a Personal Trainer Thrives as Fitness Entrepreneur

3 Reasons a Personal Trainer Thrives as Fitness Entrepreneur

As the heartbeat of the fitness world, personal trainers hold a unique power – the power to transform lives, ignite passion, and inspire lasting change. Now, imagine channeling that incredible force into something even more extraordinary – your own fitness business.

Entrepreneurship is an empowering mission, full of challenges and celebrations, and most importantly… opportunity. The opportunity to unlock your potential, control your career path and, in our experience as personal trainers, make more money. Let’s explore the compelling reasons why owning your own fitness business might be the next exhilarating step in your journey.

3 REASONS WHY A PERSONAL TRAINER THRIVES AS A FITNESS ENTREPRENEUR

“Be your own boss” is perhaps the the most common answer I hear when I ask someone what it means to be an entrepreneur. The idea of taking control of your destiny, being the captain of your ship, and savoring the sweet taste of entrepreneurial success. It is a wonderful vision, but incomplete.

Just because you want to be your own boss, doesn’t mean you should or that you will succeed. Now, hopefully, you are reading this because you are a personal trainer and maybe, just maybe, you are considering staring your own business. I say that because I believe the personal trainers have three qualities that are indicators for why a person trainer thrives as an entrepreneur.

  1. Passion
  2. Growth Focused
  3. Discipline and Control

PASSION-DRIVEN PROFESSION

A good personal trainer is passionate about fitness, about the science, about helping solve people’s problems. As a fitness entrepreneur you get to take that passion and live it everyday AND implement it the way you know it should be done. No more dreading the workday, living for the weekend or dreaming of the career you could have had.

As personal trainers we have an ability to positively impact lives by helping clients achieve their health and fitness goals. Running your own training business allows you to use your training philosophies and methods to make a lasting impact on individuals seeking your expertise. As you refine your methods and build your brand your business and reputation grows and attracts more clients and supports. Creating stability for your business and your future.

The satisfaction of seeing your clients transform both physically and mentally, knowing you played a pivotal role in their journey to a healthier lifestyle, is very fulfilling. Entrepreneurship is using that passion to help and transform your clients on yourself. Allowing you to earn more money as we discuss next!

FINANCIAL GROWTH AND POTENTIAL

We have seen it first hand, running your own personal training business will make you more money. You can break free from income constraints and unlock your financial future with a business model that cuts out the middleman, leaving more cash in your pocket and control in your hands.

With you as the ship captain you can pivot your business to meed the market demand and your personal interests and passions. Increase yours sales by offering various services like one-on-one training, small group sessions, and specialized programs that speak to your ideal client. Quickly adapt your services to align with the ever-evolving needs of your clientele and your business. Giving yourself stability and control over your success.

A business is a lot like a career, you may start in one place and end in another. Most people start their careers at the bottom and grow upwards in a company or in several companies. A business grows and changes in time in tune with its goals and resources. As an entrepreneur you get to control your business (or career) making the only limit, yourself.

CAREER CONTROL AND DISCIPLINE

There are the small things that make being an entrepreneur fun – the freedom to set your own schedule, craft your brand identity, deciding on the customer experience, allowing your creativity space to grow by testing innovative ideas and approaches. There is also one of the most valued parts, being able to institute change that best serves you and your clients immediately… because you are the boss. That control, combined with an attitude of continues learning, and discipline, are essential for success.

The entrepreneurial mindset is so close to a personal trainer, just listen. As a personal trainer you identify goals, create a program for a client, implement said program, adjust program as needed, achieve results. As a entrepreneur you do the same thing. Identify the goals of your business, create a strategy to achieve those goals and seek necessary resources, implement said strategy, adjust strategy as needed, achieve results.

All you are doing is taking a system you already know, the discipline you clearly have and apply it in a new arena to earn more money and control the growth of your career. I don’t like to bet, but this is a bet on yourself and that is one, as an entrepreneur I am generally speaking confident in.

DOES THIS RESONATE WITH YOU?

Personal trainer entrepreneur is an exciting alternative to a traditional gym based job.  If you are looking for your next career move as a personal trainer and any of these 10 reasons resonate with you, it is time to dive deeper and decide if you are willing to bet on yourself. Because after all entrepreneurship is nothing if not a bet on your ability to see an idea through to the end.

If you live in the Milwaukee area, we’re here to support your entrepreneurial goals.

3 Reasons to Own Your Own Training Business

3 Reasons to Own Your Own Training Business

Owning your own training business can be an exciting and yet overwhelming thought. But ask yourself…

  1. Are you committed to the long term?
  2. Does passion and knowledge fuel your desire to work with clients everyday?
  3. Are you looking for more career advancement opportunities?

If you answer yes to those three questions then owning your own personal training business could be the right fit for you and here is why.

Committed To The Long Term

I could tell you something cliché like “nothing easy is worth doing” or “Rome wasn’t built in a day”, but I quite honestly despise those sayings.  What you need to know is any career, and I mean any, where your success rides on your reputation and referrals is always going to require a long-term perspective.

As a personal trainer you need to be thinking 5, 10 and 20 year goals for yourself. No one else is going to make set goals or plan your future. Instead our industry is built on the backs of passionate people who burnout because of low pay, long hours and limited growth potential.

So if you want to make your career as a personal trainer stick you need to think long term goals. And if you think hard enough you will realize that in many cases owning your own personal training business is one of the key steps to take to secure your long-term success and future.

Fueled By Passion and Knowledge

I don’t care what industry or career you want to talk about, success is closely related passion and knowledge. And long-term success is always tied to passion and knowledge.

If you can truly say that you enjoy and WANT to get out of bed everyday to work with clients then you likely have sticking power in our industry. But to be a business owner you have to have one more thing.

You have to have want autonomy and responsibility of the good and the bad. And you have to want to learn because it might be simple to open an LLC, but managing finances and setting yourself up for financial independence requires the same focus and intention you put into your craft as a personal trainer.

Career Advancement Opportunities

Just about every career opportunity I have seen in our industry hits a plateau for one reason or another. Being a business owner gives you control of your career and the ability to break through plateaus, because they will still come.

This isn’t a Madonna moment where you can spend your entire career reinventing yourself. You can continually create the type of work-life balance you want by varying products/services you offer while still maintaining your reputation and relationships.

THE PURE FITNESS OPPORTUNITY

Pure Fitness is here to offer a new opportunity. We are encouraging personal trainers new, old and part-time to look at a cost-effective way of owning their own business. To take control of the career growth and earning potential.

We offer passionate personal trainers, focused on the long-term, the ability to rent a fully equipped space. Effectively minimize overhead expenses and build the career they want. And alleviate much of the financial risk and stressors associated to business ownership.

Tyler Reed, of Personal Trainer Pioneer, lays out some of the steps and financial implications of starting your own business. But at Pure Fitness we have done most of these steps for you.

Personal trainers renting at Pure Fitness have full control over their businesses. They set their price points, pick their schedules and more. There are no annoying responsibilities like cleaning and towel folding. Instead, personal trainers can focus on their craft, their career and their business.

Plus, we remain a resource for our renters. Sharing knowledge based on our education, time in the industry and personal success. A good example is this blog post on gauging success as a personal trainer.

Creating Brand Loyalty as Trainer

Creating Brand Loyalty as Trainer

Standing out in the market is important. And offering a competitive service and price are effective at capturing customer’s attention. But taking that attention and turning it into repeat clients with brand loyalty is critical to your long-term success. So let’s discuss key steps you can take for creating brand loyalty as a personal trainer.

  1. Establish your brand // Build brand awareness.
  2. Deliver your brand // Grow your brand.
  3. Earn referrals // Create brand loyalty.

HOW TO ESTABLISH YOUR PERSONAL TRAINING BRAND

You can think of a brand as an identity. It is more than what is on the outside – it is the experience. What is the culture, the vibe, the feeling you get from walking into the building, seeing your trainer and working out.

Creating a brand is done with intention. Research the market – who is your target market and who are your competitors? Where can you speak to your target market? How are you different than your competitors?

Then, answer the question, why should your ideal client pick you?

And you have found your message.

Get your message out into the community and start building brand awareness. Let your clients experience your message and grow your brand.

RESOURCES TO SHARE YOUR BRAND

  • Website / Online Listings
  • Social Media
  • Community Organizations / Publications
  • Email Campaigns
  • Events / Open House

If you are already an established personal trainer looking to change your current career trajectory. You might want to consider some new ways to improve your career satisfaction.

HOW TO CONSISTENTLY DELIVER A BRAND EXPERIENCE

Have a system. Keep yourself accountable. Do the little things.

Working in a system to onboard new clients, evaluate client progress, maintain records, and communicate with clients will make you more successful. Keep yourself organized so you spend less time managing and more time delivering. And set firm boundaries that define your clients experience and use the system to ensure they are held.

Remember personal training is a relationship based job, cultivate strong relationships as an extension of your brand.

STANDARDS YOU CAN SET

  • New client inquiries are answered within 48 hours. Making an impression before you even have made them a client.
  • Have branded paperwork and a process for before, during and after a clients first session.
  • Follow-up with your clients, answer texts/e-mails, and research additional information.

WHY EARNING REFERRALS IS AN INDICATOR OF BRAND LOYALTY

Only a client with brand loyalty will be referring you new business. Having your clients act as brand ambassadors, getting your name on the minds of people in the community, sending you referrals is an effective way to gauge your success as a personal trainer.

Asking for referrals can be awkward, which is why I believe in sharing with your clients what you need. By simply telling them you are looking for 1-2 new clients, or have a specific time slot that opened up can trigger a referral.

SELF-EMPLOYED VS EMPLOYED

In our industry, clients are generally loyal to a trainer and not a gym. So whether you work for yourself or someone else, your brand loyalty is important.

But both of those career paths have obstacles. Pure Fitness is offering a new opportunity to personal trainers. A cost-effective way of owning their own business. To truly take control of the career growth and earning potential through a studio rental. And minimize overhead expenses, alleviate a lot of financial risk and stress associated to ownership and allows full control over their business.

3 Ways to Gauge Success As A Trainer

3 Ways to Gauge Success As A Trainer

Whether you work at a gym or you’re an owner reflecting and evaluating your performance as a personal trainer is a necessary component to growth and long-term success. Here are 3 ways to gauge your business success as a personal trainer:

  1. Client Retention
  2. Client Referrals
  3. Client Success

CLIENT RETENTION IN PERSONAL TRAINING

Client retention gives you career/income stability. And in an industry that has an 80-90% turnover rate of personal trainers, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, simply sticking around is key.

FIRST STEP

Commit to the long haul. Focus on where you want to be in 10-15 years. Build your brand, your skills and your relationships to reflect your long term vision.

SECOND STEP

There are three things you can do everyday to retain clients: listen, educate and follow-up.

The client is here for her/himself and they will tell you exactly what they want. Listen. A client comes to you because they believe you know more than them. Educate. Your clients make strides and share personal information. Follow-up.

Do this routine and use the feedback to improve your programming and relationship.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR CAREER?

For those of you who are curious, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, personal trainers are leaving because they are unhappy with work hours, atmosphere, career mobility, and compensation among other things.

Pure Fitness’ Independent Personal Trainer model is designed to help personal trainers increase their career happiness and longevity by improving compensation, growth and work hours through business ownership. Read Improve the Work Life Balance of a Trainer for insight into how we are offering a new type of career as a personal trainer.

CLIENT REFERRALS IN PERSONAL TRAINING

In my experience client retention leads to client referrals.

Not all clients refer. But you can do three things to encourage referrals.

  1. Inform – make sure your clients know that you are accepting and actively looking for new clients.
  2. Share – Tell clients about opportunities or other services that may interest them or their friends and family.
  3. Reward – offer an incentive for referrals, but remember the success of your referrals comes from the value you have built in your relationship with a client, not the value of the incentive.

SET YOURSELF APART FROM THE CROWD

I think it is important to note, when you get a referral treat the referrer as important as you treat the new client. After all, you want them to refer again. The necessity is to thank the referring client directly with a face-to-face conversation and even a card.

CLIENT SUCCESS IN PERSONAL TRAINING

Your goal is to deliver quality programming designed to help your client reach their goals. Measuring and communicating client progress is essential to properly evaluating success.

Consider making a client specific assessment protocol. It can include metrics like body fat and measurements, and fitness testing like a flexibility assessment and a 1 rep max. Communicate the results and how the program is designed to support their goals to create trust and validation.

SUCCESS AS A PERSONAL TRAINER

Client results, retention and referrals serve as validation of your skills as a personal trainer. They show your ability to listen to needs, apply knowledge, create and implement a program designed for success.

The most valuable asset you have is your clients.  Clients are the life blood of your business. Take time and step away from training to evaluate your business health to ensure you are creating a great experience for your clients.

WHAT ABOUT BUSINESS OWNERSHIP?

Pure Fitness is here to offer a new opportunity. We are encouraging personal trainers new, old and part-time to look at a cost-effective way of owning their own business. To take control of the career growth and earning potential by renting a full equipped studio.

Personal trainers renting at Pure Fitness have full control over their businesses. They set their price points, pick their schedules and more. There are no annoying responsibilities like cleaning and towel folding. Instead, personal trainers can focus on their craft, their career and their business.

Improve the Work Life Balance of a Trainer

Improve the Work Life Balance of a Trainer

The fitness industry is a growing and exciting area right now. Personal training, specifically boutique fitness, is a creative, flexible, and in-demand space that grows annually. It is also one that struggles to retain personal trainers due to multifaceted job dissatisfaction. Here is how Pure Fitness is going to improve the work life balance of a personal trainer allowing them to love their career and take hold of their future.

CURRENT LANDSCAPE IN PERSONAL TRAINING

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics the industry is projected to grow 39% with a personal trainer turnover of 80-90%. This turnover can be attributed to work hours, pay and stunted career growth.

Most positions for personal trainers are hourly based with few opportunities for salaried positions. It is true that in some cases an hourly position can be very lucrative. That is rarely the case for personal trainers.

The average personal trainers are working on an hourly pay basis hoping to pick-up new clients, grow their business and build stability. To do so they need to make themselves available. That means all day, every day, including weekends. This wide open schedule allows personal trainers to cast the broadest net. Successfully attracting the largest number of clients to stimulate income.

On a national average, personal trainers make $40,500 annually depending on employer and geographic location. At 40 hours a week and 52 weeks in year, the average trainer is making approximately $19.50 per hour.

Career growth is represented by new roles and responsibilities and an increase in compensation. In the case of a personal trainer, vertical growth (new roles and responsibilities) are rare. Hourly pay is a result of how much a client pays per session, which will directly limit earning potential.

THE CHALLENGES FACING A CAREER AS A PERSONAL TRAINER

A personal trainer’s work hours will always be dictated by client availability. Most people want to train before work, at lunch, or after work. For a trainer to work a standard 8-9 hour day of sessions they are likely to be working from 5 am to 8 pm, just not every hour.

That is the recipe for burnout.

Career growth comes to a halt after a few years for most personal trainers. Simply because there is a ceiling on how much people are willing to pay for personal training.

The result is that qualified personal trainers leave for more rewarding and lucrative opportunities. And others branch out on their own. Committed to staying in the industry.

HOW TO IMPROVE THE WORK LIFE BALANCE OF A PERSONAL TRAINER

Pure Fitness is here to offer a new opportunity. We are encouraging personal trainers new, old and part-time to look at a cost-effective way of owning their own business. To take control of the career growth and earning potential.

We offer passionate personal trainers, focused on the long-term, the ability to rent space. Effectively minimize overhead expenses and build the career they want. And alleviate much of the financial risk and stressors associated to business ownership.
